You see them at Cairo Carnivale or at your local swap meets, showcases or workshops. Vendors . . . selling everything from costumes, hip scarves and veils to zills, swords and music. Shopping at local events is a great way to find costumes and other belly dance necessities. Yes, I said ‘necessities.’ We are belly dancers and we don’t just want our coin belts, we ‘need’ them, like the air we breathe (see You Know You’re a Belly Dancer When . . . and Belly Dance Addiction).
But, since most vendors do not have conventional stores, what do you do in between events, or if you can’t make it to an event that has vendors?
Try calling your favorite merchant and asking if they will see customers by appointment.
As a well known fixture at Cairo Carnivale, Rakkasah and the Belly Dancer of the Universe Competition, Turquoise has been in the forefront of providing quality merchandise to the belly dance community for more than 35 years. Turquoise started as manufacturers and distributors of finely crafted finger cymbals made in the USA (originally in Chicago). Their cymbals became known throughout the world and are currently manufactured right here in Los Angeles. The company later expanded to become one of the premier manufacturers of high quality hips scarves (made in Egypt) and importers of belly dance costumes, veils, and other items. Their extensive inventory includes costumes, dresses, caftans, coin belts, hip scarves and sashes, China silk veils (in 20 solid colors and 20 color combinations), Egyptian fringe, isis wings, cymbals, doumbeks, CDs, video tapes, DVDs and more. In addition to vending and sales by appointment, they also cater to their world wide customers on-line at www.turquoiseintl.com.
Turquoise International, a local shopping hot spot located in the San Fernando Valley, welcomes customers by appointment. The owner, Ali, is gracious and truly understands the needs of belly dancers. He knows that a costume doesn’t only have to look great, but it also has to make the dancer feel great!
A visit to Turquoise International can only be compared to being a kid in a candy store. Shelves and shelves of hip scarves in an array of colors and styles, gorgeous silk veils and bags of costumes await you. They carry a wide variety of costumes made by different designers, including the last of the costumes made by Madame Abla, and costumes (known as Abla Style costumes) made by designers who apprenticed with her. In addition to carrying in-stock costumes, they will custom order them for you (allow at least 2-3 months for delivery). Ask them about their wholesale prices and teacher discounts. And, mark your calendar for their special year end sale in December.
Turquoise International also sponsors workshops throughout the world, as well as an annual trip to Egypt. For more information, go to www.turquoiseintl.com.
Find additional vendors that are available by appointment only in our LAShopping section. Your next belly dance treasure may be just a phone call away.
