Belly dance goodies in Downtown Los Angeles – Santee Street (NOT the Alley)

For the die hard shopper, Santee Alley in the Los Angeles Fashion District is a great place to hunt for
amazing bargains.  On any given day, and especially on weekends, tourists and locals alike flood this three
block strip (east of Santee Street between Olympic Boulevard and 11th Street) in downtown Los Angeles.
The brave of heart, willing to tackle the masses, can find belly dance pieces tucked away in the Alley, as well
as in several stores throughout other parts of the Fashion District.

But, if you are not up for battling massive crowds or hunting through store after store, try the one block on
the east side of Santee Street between 9th and Olympic Boulevard.  Here you will find a few shops with belly
dance costume pieces and class wear made primarily in China, India and Thailand.  Some of the stores sell
wholesale and retail, and may be willing to negotiate the price if you are buying multiple items, and some
may be amenable to just plain haggling.  Most open their doors by 10:00 a.m. and close between 5:00 and
5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.  Occasionally certain vendors may have Sunday hours, so if you are
interested, give them a call.

For a flavor of Santee Street, try these 5 stores:
Shiba has a beautiful array of big skirts, halter
tops with coins, hip scarves, and matching
beaded tops and belts, some with very long
fringe, as well as many other items.

A few doors away is
Krishma, with handmade
garments from India, including embellished
harem pants, coin fringed beaded belts with
matching tops, velvet peacock hip scarves, and
robes that would make great cover-ups.  As
manufacturers, they can custom make costumes
and other pieces.
Close to the corner of 9th Street is Ethos
Vintage Closet
, which has gorgeous copies
of vintage and Victorian pieces, including a
rack of velvet peacock hip scarves and
perfect cover ups in the form of eye
catching robes.

On a recent shopping trip
Style In Fashion
and Westside Designs carried practice coin
hip scarves made in China for only $5.99,
matching beaded belts and tops (with fringe
and coins),  practice skirts and coin tops.

If you are at 9th and Santee, you are only a block away from several
stores where you can find all that glitters if you are making a belly
dance costume or accessories or want to embellish an existing
costume.  Check out
All That Glitters.
